Bougainvillea Memories

Bougainvillea is a tropical and subtropical woody, evergreen, shrubby plant, which is perhaps one of my most favourite plants. When you live in a Mediterranean country like Cyprus, you are bound to spot the beautiful flowers they produce, that bring colour and liveliness to every corner of the island.  The reason I like them is because they require very little ‘looking after’ in order for them to look as gorgeous as they do, which is quite refreshing. They are the type of plants that survive on very little water, in hot weather conditions, and I admire anything that is strong, beautiful and does not depend on other things.

The Bougainvillea usually looks like large colourful vines and tends to blossom in Spring and early Summer. It is available in many colours including hot pink (my favourite), red, purple, lavender, yellow, orange, pale pink, white, and white with pink-tipped edges. Some grow only a few metres, and some up to 20m in height. In other words, they are rapid growers and climbers and can sometimes be messy. During my childhood years, one of our neighbours had a very large pink Bougainvillea vine in his back garden. Since his garden was back-to-back with our garden, it felt like the vine was also ours, perhaps the reason why these plants are so special to me. My Dad, of course, did not feel the same, as he had to constantly sweep away the dried flowers that fell off the vine and got blown into our garden.

I think that one can only gain from the Bougainvillea, as they produce masses of stunning blooms that continue to flower even during the toughest times. Their beauty from their coloured bracts, brighten the spirit and warm the heart. Any Bougainvillea is easy to grow, they require low maintenance and are extremely drought tolerant once established. So, if you are looking for the ideal plants for patios and balconies, that will astound you with their colours, this is the option to go for.
